Special Touches

I wouldn’t be the first event wedding planner to tell you that the average celebration is evolving. Previously, the typical wedding didn’t possess the type of signature style we are seeing now. We’ve walked away from the boring wedding elements and have turned them up a notch to give them character and a little more pizzazz. Today let’s talk about adding special touches to your wedding and how to do that. It’s as simple as pairing elements that you wouldn’t think go together, but doing it in such a way that the elements you wouldn’t think would naturally go together, suddenly create an ironic harmony. A few ideas on how to do this, well our inspirational images today speak volumes to what I mean. It can be anything from using unconventional garden flowers to coming up with a unique and unexpected photo display, to using props you wouldn’t think to use in your wedding décor like umbrellas or wearing unconventional wedding shoes. It’s about incorporating do-it-yourself elements, or running wild with a color scheme that uses as many colors as you want or even presenting an antique feel by purposefully mismatching elements. It is for effects like this that it is super important to hire the right wedding coordinator and someone you feel understands your vision to the core. The most important thing to keep in mind and it’s what I remind you of in every post, stay true to your personality and always follow your heart by doing what you love!

“Inspire Me Bride” Contest Winner Announcement

Grand Prize Winner - Lindsay Pond

It was a successful contest month and the competition was tough for our “Inspire Me Bride” contest giveaway. We have reviewed the submissions, tallied the inspiration board votes on both A Monique Affair, and our contest partner, Adeline & Grace Photography’s Facebook pages, checked the requirement, and have come up with our winner. We would like to congratulate LINDSAY POND. Her wedding ideas will be the theme of a future styled shoot. Giving her some tough competition we’d like to make mention of our runner up contestant, CATHY CHAN. Both ladies did a beautiful job and had some great ideas. Take a look at their work for yourself and admire the beauty.
As part of the grand prize Adeline & Grace Photography and A Monique Affair will be working on an amazing styled shoot inspired by Lindsay Pond’s wedding ideas, soon to be posted to our website. We’d like to take a moment to thank all of our participants and let all our followers know to be on the look-out for our next “Inspire Me Wedding Board Contest” details coming soon.

Additionally, I wanted to give a quick shout out the creative team that will be assisting us in bringing the winning inspiration board to life in our styled photo shoot. This list of sponsors is subject to change as more people join our creative team:
WEDDING DESIGN & CONCEPT:  A Monique Affair
                       PHOTOGRAPHER:  Adeline & Grace Photography
                       MAKE-UP: Eliza Desch
                       CAKE: Fleur de Lisa
                       FLOWERS: Floralisa
                       RENTALS: Hartmann Studios
                       INVITATION SUITE: Di Calligraphy

Once again from the bottom of our heart we’d like to send out a great big THANK YOU to all those that participated and helped spread the word about our contest. We couldn’t have done it without you.

UPDATED TO REFLECT CONTEST RECOUNT: Due to contest technicalities, the administrators of the Inspire Me Bride contest giveaway have conducted a recount of votes, and the judges have determined that both LINDSAY POND and CATHY CHAN are eligible, and will be receiving $100 gift card contest prize. The administrators have determined there was a discrepancy in the counting of the votes and the styled photo shoot will be inspired by the winning inspiration board after the recount. We’d like to once again congratulate our winner LINDSAY POND for her beautiful peacock themed wedding inspiration board. Thank you again to all who participated.

A Linen Love Affair

Most people won’t agree when I say that linens are really exciting. There are many creative ways to use them aside from your average table cloths and place settings, which is what the average mind thinks of when you bring up the importance of them. Today, I want to dance with the subject and show you how choosing linens can actually enhance and even add a big wow factor to your events.

Even Cakes Can Achieve a Draping Effect

There are amazing effects you can achieve with the proper use of linens. From dressing up chairs to jazzing up your celebration hall, to adding a pops of color to your décor, choosing the right types of linen can add a lot to your design concept. Achieve a heavenly look by using sheer textured linens, practice the art of draping to get a more Grecian effect, or incorporate the latest color trend by pairing brighter linens with black and white. I am a big believer in the power of linens and I often steer my clients toward using them. In today’s collection of inspirational images I think you’ll get the idea I’m referring to. Remember to go with what fits in with your personality and like I always say, do what you love.

AMA Talks Design, Flowers & Vintage with Charlie & Olivia

Today we introduce you to a boutique business so new, it’s in a class all by itself, and we are excited to be one of the first talking about it. Charlie & Olivia fuse design inspired by flowers and vintage to create the perfect celebration. Elvira and Dawn have a love for making all things pretty which drove them to open a design company which focuses on creating unique designs for each and every client they take on. Offering services ranging from floral arrangements and design conception to vintage décor and dinnerware rentals, as well as, offering personalized services like handmade gifts and textiles, they are unlike any other business in the industry. Their goal is always to create a stunning backdrop inspired by the personality of the client with goal of making each and every affair unforgettable. There’s no denying they have a knack for mixing unique elements. If you want to learn more about them, their services or to follow their design blog, check out the website at Charlie &Olivia. Or for even more info find them on Facebook and Twitter (@charlienolivia).

AMA:  Tell us a little bit about your new business, and what you believe sets you apart from other businesses in the event planning industry?

C&O:  When Charlie & Olivia sets out to do an event, we are passionate about creating a stunning backdrop inspired by our clients for their guests to enjoy. We are one of the few event design firms that offer Floral Design, Vintage Dinnerware Rentals, Décor Rentals, and custom linens. We have the ability to come in and help you wherever you are in your design planning process. Whether you’re in the beginning stages, or wrapping up the final design we do a great job of polishing and fine tuning. We have the ability to pretty much do it all and one aspect we can be seen as a one stop-shop!

AMA: Your business is quite unique in that you come up with design concepts, but you’re not a coordination service. What sets your business apart from the average coordinator?

C&O: We have often been asked why we don’t coordinate, especially because we do a lot of the design groundwork that your typical coordinator would handle. We decided early in the process of building our company that we wanted focus more on the design element and less on setting the pace for events. However, we work well with coordinators and have many coordinator contacts in the event planning industry we work alongside with. This also adds another unique aspect to our business in that we can recommend good coordination services, and that gives us an edge.

AMA:  Do you have a favorite current floral trend?

C&O:  We are not big on following floral trends and rely more on our imagination and creativity. Our floral design concepts are based on what is in season, we build on that and on what inspires us at any given moment.  Our designs are often inspired by textiles, fabric, and patterns, things that surround our everyday life. However we keep up with current wedding trends and follow many design blogs on a daily basis, as well as, fashion magazines. This season, neon is very big. It’s the “it” thing to do and we see many designers incorporating it. We see how it’s being used and are enjoying playing with bright elements in our styling.

AMA:  When working with a bride on her wedding, what factors do you recommend she keep in mind when coming up with a floral or design concept?

C&O:  We usually tell our brides to keep in mind that flowers are seasonal. For example, if peonies are a bride or groom’s favorite flower, and they want to have a November wedding, well we let them know that peonies around that time may be harder to find. Not only that, but they could be 4 times the cost than if you were to be planning a spring wedding. We often recommend that the brides and grooms be open to what’s in season and we stand firmly behind our creativity factor and believe that we will give them the exact wow factor they are looking for, even if their favorite blooms are not available.

AMA:  You work with and find a lot of vintage inspired glassware, what recommendations would you make to a bride when it comes to glassware or wedding china?

C&O:  We love the look of mismatched dinnerware. Our selection of vintage dishes and glassware are designed to be just that, mismatched. We often tell brides and grooms not to be afraid of not matching, especially because our niche is making it all come together.

AMA: Any money saving or do-it-yourself tips on keeping floral designs and glassware on the lower side of a budget?

C&O:  To keep the cost down on floral arrangements, we strongly recommend going with what’s in season, that’s one of the best money saving tips we can offer. Also, instead of purchasing vessels to help keep cost down further we offer rentals. We do our best to work with our couple’s budget and we go the extra mile to figure a way to make it work beautifully. Our favorite part is seeing a smile on our client’s face when they get their first look at what we’ve created.

Add a Little Swagger: Dressing the Groom(s)

Last week we focused on dressing the bride, so this week I wanted to pay special attention to our grooms out there. Since the wedding usually revolves around the bride, we sometimes forget to focus on the groom, or grooms in our modern day weddings involving gay couples. There is a lot to focus on by way of styling the groom for his big day, and there are many ways to add some swagger, and pops of color to a groom’s wedding day outfit. For this reason, I put together a small guide covering a few of the ways to add a unique touch to a groom’s outfit. Because he's just as important as the bride. Check out these tips and show up at your wedding with style.

Ditch the Tux – Yes it’s true, a tux is very formal and classic, but we’ve seen it over and over again. Be a trendsetter and opt for a beautifully cut suit, go with pin stripes or an unconventional color, you’ll be the talk of your wedding.

Get Styling with Your Tie – Ties are all the rage these days. They are being made by all the top designers and in really eye catching colors and prints. Choose one that matches your style or wedding décor and tie it on.

Be Different with Your Socks – We’ve all taken notice of those really cool pictures of funky socks at weddings, now you can have your very own. Choose a bold color or an argyle print and knock your socks off.

Go With Funky Shoes – Another way for grooms to add some swagger, opt for ditching the normal black formal shoes and go with wing tips, colored converse or maybe even oxfords.

Show Off Your Culture – Be proud of your heritage and decide to dress traditionally. If you’re Scottish wear your traditional kilt or find a way to incorporate some cultural color into the mix. Connecting culture with your wedding theme adds a lot of character to the wedding.

When the tough gets going and life gets rough is when we especially see that nothing in the material world matters without love. Today I want to profess my love for all things romantic and for Valentine’s Day, so I bring you images of love and décor inspired by Valentine’s Day marriages and proposals. Perhaps you are planning to wed next year in a Valentine’s Day inspired ceremony, or have a Valentine’s Day engagement party or bridal shower. Or maybe just for all of those in love with love, I leave you with these beautiful and inspiring images that will help you welcome a little bit more love into your life. Dressing the Bride

As a wedding planner, I have a collection of special moments I carry near and dear to my heart. Being a part of a couple’s wedding is really special, so much so, I sometimes feel like Cinderella’s fairy god mother. I help the bride make it happen and assist her every step of the way. I often recount the story of one particular bride who I loved so much because she was daring. Daring enough to go against the grain, that she requested a red wedding dress. I took to the hunt, searched far and near, and in the end granted her this ultimate wedding wish. With that sentiment in mind I thought it would be fun to post an inspiration blog showcasing beautiful wedding dresses. Some may not realize how important the dress really is. Not only does it have a hand in making the bride feel phenomenal, but in an unconventional sense, the wedding dress is also on display, and even showcases as part the celebration's décor. It is a facet of the bride’s creativity and personality. It’s the wow factor and the element that makes the bride the talk of the town. Below is a collection of wedding dress images. Trends and  the direction  in which they are going in the upcoming season. Remember what we always say, stay true to your personality and do what you love!
